This project required my knowledge and training in traditional typography design to carry over new ideas into my new characters.
I also did light user interviews to fully understand their complaints. When stakeholders approved this side project, I began investigating what forms, patterns, and intentions lived in the Merriweather typeface. After researching and learning about type-design programs, I proposed to take responsibility and change the characters myself. My Role: After the switch to Merriweather (the basis for Elizabeth Serif), complaints of certain character designs continued. Problem: The classic typeface Georgia-used on Kinja from the beginning -was outdated and wasn't optimized to how our readers were experiencing our content on new and various devices.Īpproach: I had to find a visually "modern" webfont that included many language-supported characters, visually pleasing reading colors, and made a stylistic nod to classic newspapers. After many years and the invention of new devices to read on, departments across Gawker Media Group wanted to give our websites a facelift and make them look more modern with an updated body typeface. Kinja's first stories relied on the classic, web-safe, and ubiquitous typeface, Georgia. It has a click-to-publish editor, draft manager, comment system with moderation tools, native advertising, cross-site recirculation, and allows publishing in a variety of visual layouts and compositions. Note: Kinja is the homegrown, built-in-house content management system (CMS) used by the Gizmodo Media Group and the Onion Groups.
